stellar sea lion

Eumetopias jubatas

A colony of Steller sea lions crowds dark basalt shores along Frederick Sound in Southeast Alaska, their tawny bodies bathed in backlit mist and spray. Dramatic lighting captures suspended droplets, steam rising in the mid-day sun, and raw jostling energy—an almost audible scene of barks and splashes. These wave-cut cliffs formed from ancient lava flows provide the elevated, stable platforms sea lions need for resting, breeding, and predator surveillance, while the charcoal basalt throws their honey-gold coats into striking relief.
